Class Timetables

Year 6 Overview

Reading in Year 6

This year, we aim to foster a love of reading while building more advanced comprehension skills. Children will explore a wide variety of texts—from classic novels to modern poetry—and learn to:

  • Infer meaning from the text.
  • Make predictions and summarise key information.
  • Analyse the author’s language choices and impact. Reading fluency and stamina are developed through regular whole-class and independent reading sessions.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling in Year 6 (GPAS)

Pupils will expand their command of grammar and punctuation to improve their writing. Key areas include:

  • Using modal verbs, relative clauses, and cohesive devices.
  • Applying accurate punctuation: colons, semicolons, brackets, and commas.
  • Weekly spelling patterns and rules to enhance vocabulary and accuracy. We encourage consistent application of GPAS across all written tasks.

Writing in Year 6

In Year 6, children become more confident in structuring their ideas and expressing themselves clearly. They will write across a range of genres, including narratives, persuasive letters, explanation texts and poetry. Focus areas include:

  • Planning, drafting and editing their work independently.
  • Using figurative language and varied sentence structures.
  • Adapting writing style for different audiences and purposes

Mathematics in Year 6

Mathematical understanding is extended through both practical and abstract problem-solving. Pupils will cover:

  • Place value, including numbers up to 1,000,000.
  • Formal written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Measurement, geometry and data handling. Reasoning and explanation are key parts of our approach to help build confidence and fluency

Assessment

Assessment for learning is used:

  •  Daily within class to identify children intervention support

Summative assessment is used:

  • Every six weeks to assess progress, to identify gaps in learning that need to be addressed, to identify any children needing additional support and to plan the Keep-up support that they need.
  •  By SLT and scrutinised through the Pixl assessment tracker, to narrow attainment gaps between different groups of children and so that any additional support for teachers can be put into place.

Homework in Year 6

Daily Reading

We encourage all children to read at home daily and a note to be written in their reading record book. If the schoolbook has been completed, then please read and share any other books or comics that you have at home. These can also be record in the reading record and count towards the number of daily reads.
